Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation

#1

Post by Graeme1858 »

Has anyone spotted Mercury whilst it's at Greatest Eastern Elongation?

I moved my telescope from the garden patio to the back bedroom to get a good look at the Western horizon over a week ago. There have been just three cloudless evenings since then and every time the clouds gathered as the Sun went down. Twice I managed to get a look at the elusive planet through my binoculars and once even got treated to a brilliant view of both Mercury and Mars together! But only one one of those times did I get an out of focus Mercury on the laptop screen. By the time I got the focus closer the gap in the clouds closed. All good practice though!

We have a heatwave coming up from Africa this week so I'll give it a few more days then I have to get back down to the patio before Jupiter moves too far past opposition.

Regards

Graeme

Nope - but I have not tried - and I am trying to get back into the "swing of things" after a too long layoff! :D

Been a while for me. Back then, there were only 7 other houses in the neighborhood. It is quite full now and a lot of my lower altitude views have been blocked.

I do need to make an active effort to observe it again.

Similar problem for me with development and street lighting. May have to plan a trip to at least a semi-dark site to have a decent chance of observing more targets.

It was not to be! The telescope is back in it's rightful place in the back garden. I'll have another go at Mercury in October. In the meantime, lets see what we can do with Jupiter and Saturn!
