The first few minutes is an overview. The majority of the film as actual and the coms are actual. I just watched it again. I can only imagine what it was like for the flight controllers to sit there and watch this happen.

It moved me when I watched this. It took me back to those days of excitement and anticipation. I remembered the feeling I had then as a young teenager. It was such an exciting and unifying time when other things were so devisive.

I think I have forgotten how fantastic this event was. And maybe, with all our technological progress since then, I have allowed it to become a mere commonplace event in my memory. But it was no such thing.

Later my Uncle told stories of his work in all of this and it made the hair stand up on the back of my head. It amazed me then and still amazes me today that the rocket did not tip over as it slowly rose from the launch pad.

I use some clips from Houston and their perspective when I do Apollo 11 Programs. Like you, most remember it through rose colored glasses and it doesn't seem like such a big deal anymore. Everyone remembers the success, but the guys at Mission Control have a very different recollection of events. Not quite the smooth sailing we saw on our TVs that night.I will see if I can find one online. It really puts it in perspective for me.

I have the DVD Set that NASA released 15+ years ago that has all of the original footage and audio, plus the news casts that were broadcasting, etc. It's a really cool set.

I haven't watched it in a while - I should have last month, but didn't.

My recollection of the event was that it was plenty tense, even watching on TV. When the program alarms started coming in, and there was not an immediate response to the first one, I got the feeling things weren't quite going as planned. When the later alarms were quickly dismissed, it felt like Mission Control had decided they were two miles away, they were going to land this thing no matter what. Plenty of drama for a 14 year old who still dreamed of being an astronaut one day!

Thanks for sharing the link, Mark. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane!

Last month, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, our local club in Culpeper had a special presentation on the Moon, which included a discussion of all six Apollo landings/landing sites...and we also scheduled a couple of observing sessions dedicated to checking out the landing sites. We used my 4 inch, f/15 Unitron and the 30 inch Obsession at Morning Calm Observatory.

The Culpeper County library also sponsored a special display of Lunar and Apollo related books.
