As another amateur who enjoys looking at the moon, the thing that struck me most was the article described him as an amateur astronomer who just got/made a telescope and started sketching and thinking and ended up mapping. It appears that he eventually rose to director of the Lunar Section of the British Astronomical Association.

Even in some of the projects astronomers are working on today, I see work by amateur astronomers (like us?) mentioned among those doing the work. I don't know how many of the sciences still have room for amateurs doing some of the heavy lifting. Maybe Wilkin's map is reminder that astronomy is a science that still has significant amateur influence.
