SWaB: beyond the Big Bang
This is a nicely written manifesto advocating the standard inflation point of view. I'm skeptical that inflation is as much a slam dunk as is portrayed. A cyclic universe with Big Bounces versus Big Bangs can do these things just as well.

Good. It's as good as it gets and I'm not entirely convinced. The particle for the inflation field has yet to be identified for instance and the only proposed solution (inflaton = Higgs boson) is not convincing either.
The fact that the DM particle (if any) hasn't been IDed is less of a problem IMO. DM doesn't NEED a field so it doesn't need a particle. (Defects in the vacuum work fine as DM.) But the inflation of the universe demands an inflation field and therefore a corresponding inflaton particle has to exist.
