It's an amusing thing to consider and the history has many lessons.

Should he have covered the emotional damage to people overly invested in alternative theories of gravity?

So damage to the earth would require the presence of two black holes within the solar system. Fortunately that is not the case.

So... would I be correct in assuming that any astronomical event close enough to us that its gravitational waves would become even slightly hazardous, would already result in our utter obliteration due to the intensity of radiation of all types other than gravitational waves? Seems to me that this is a bit like worrying about your hearing being damaged by the sound of a 12 gauge shotgun, as it is firing a load of buckshot directly into your face from 6 feet away. It's not the sound from the blast that's the primary problem...
:)
