Re: Dr H video "can physics be too speculative?"
Well, I have to say that I agree with almost everything except the classification of particle DM research as degenerative. There are so many different and unrelated observations that consistently point to the same amount of DM in the universe: galaxy rotation curves, dynamics of galaxy clusters, the formation of galaxies, the CMB, the primordial abundance of deuterium from the Big Bang. In place of particle DM as being degenerative I'd prefer alternative gravity theories such as MOND and its kindred. It is only capable of explaining the galaxy rotation curves of galaxies with dark matter and is refuted by the dynamics from which dark matter is absent. But then we can't criticize our pets, can we?

When watching the video, same thing came to my mind: DM research seems to advance astronomy and physics.

She also seems to forget that the first DM particle was the neutrino.....turboscrew wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 4:55 pm When watching the video, same thing came to my mind: DM research seems to advance astronomy and physics.

hmmm...
Is Einstein's thought experiment of the 'POV of a photon' too speculative?

Re: Dr H video "can physics be too speculative?"
Since it led to relativity, no. In itself, yes. It was by refining the inherent contradiction of the idea "POV of a photon" and untangling the confusions therein that birthed relativity. Some bad ideas, clarified, become very fruitful.

Humans can be "too speculative". Physics is an abstraction.
Must have been a slow news day in her neighborhood.

Any metaphor will tear if stretched over too much reality.
