So it's only what, 500% beyond the originally planned mission lifetime? I'll miss the steady stream of images but HST has been so wildly successful that it's hard to be sad at this point.
The JWST has some very big shoes to fill.
Any metaphor will tear if stretched over too much reality.

All true, but I'm still sad to see it go. JWST will hopefully see first light someday...... ;)

Any chance that astronauts could repair it? I'm not holding my breath for the JWST to be put into orbit anytime soon.

It could be repaired by astronauts if there was the political will to do so. This failed computer was upgraded/repaired on a previous spacewalk. That's something that would be much more difficult with JWST.

Very unfortunate, hopefully NASA will be able to come up with a fix of some sort.

Trying to fix a 1980's computer remotely doesn't sound good :(

I remember when it was launched, I thought I hope to see these images, not realizing there would be an internet someday.

Well, I guess it had to happen at one point... Still, Hubble was to me Old Faithful. I hold it personally responsible for getting me back into the whole astronomy thing in my mid-twenties. Now I'm in my mid-fifties...

I am glad I got to live through what it found out. I have a lot of astronomy books and magazines; I still refer to to them as pre and post HST. So many discoveries, confirmations and game-changers.

Too bad we couldn't roll out one more Shuttle. As for the JWST, well, I'm with all of you on that one...!!

Thanks for the info nFA; though like yourself, not news I wanted to hear!

I'm skeptical that the JWST will be launched at all.

I can understand that. For once the current delay isn't because of the JWST itself but rather the launch vehicle. My skepticism is more about whether it will unfold itself and deploy as planned once it gets on station.

I imagine with the Falcon/Crew Dragon combo, SpaceX could put together a repair mission for much less cost than a Shuttle flight. I just don't know how it would work without the shuttle's robot arm to stabilize the HST.

but Hubble isn't just for pretty pictures. it still does science. JWST also doesn't cover the visible and UV light like HST does. only light at wavelengths longer than 0.6 microns is used.
