I really enjoyed that; explaining how you learn about a hard to study planet by looking at a not planet/not star using actual stars to correct the data. It gives a picture of the ingenuity common in the scientific enterprise that I feel gets lost in articles that focus on computer simulations, big data, or the latest uber technology telescope.

The idea of clouds of vaporized carborundum also tickled me.
