I remember, in his book "Gaia – a new look at life on Earth" James Lovelock mentioned that local reversal of entropy as a possible sign of life.

One has to be careful about the specifics. The birth of a star is a local decrease of entropy. Its radiation adds to the total entropy of the universe but locally there is a decrease.

Yes, but with exoplanets, that might be good sieve for further studies. The absorption spectra should show chemical "imbalances" in the exoplanets' atmosphere. And thermal oddities might come into question too.

Those could be used as criteria for targetting resources, but not, of course, as the only criteria.
