I can't help thinking that statistical physics is the best we can do, if we don't have the info about the initial conditions. But I also wonder if we could trace back the initial conditions if we measured twice, and if we had some idea how the measurement is supposed to affect the system. On the other hand, statistical physics is often better in the real life, because going through a lot of initial conditions to predict the outcome is just not feasible.
And still, for applications design, tracing back is usually too late.
