I have a hard time seeing M51 on a clear night, let alone a single star over there. That a planet may have been detected on one warps my brain. Granted, they used x ray sensors but it is amazing nonetheless.

Large aperture and/or being in space helps. M51 is close enough that individual Cepheid variables can be distinguished, studied and derived light curves and distances.
