Start of cycle 25.
Had a great viewing session of the new active region today, and although a lot of smoke from nearby fires, was able to get a good view through my double stacked LS100 scope. I Was determined to catch this AR as it signals the start of the new cycle. I started in Ha solar just after the start of the last cycle after purchasing a PST on a whim when the price dropped dramatically (would class that as being the best astronomical decision I ever made), and wanted to make sure I catch the start of this cycle. Had so many great views during the last cycle, so looking forward to this one. The Sun in H alpha is the most dynamic astronomical object you can view, changes happen in minutes, and almost real time. Any one contemplating getting into Ha solar but unsure, I'd say go for it, you wont regret it.

Re: Start of cycle 25.
What is an "AR"?
I tried googling different ways to say "solar... AR... cycle ..." I found some solar powered bicycles and other stuff totally unrelated. I also found this from our National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( a uniformed service of the US Government - not many people know that).
See here: https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/sola ... rogression
I did find PST = Personal Solar Telescope. See from Meade here: https://www.meade.com/coronado-personal ... e-pst.html

Re: Start of cycle 25.
I haven't seen a sunspot in months. Of course, I don't look very often at the sun. But if there is one, or some, Huzzah! Finally something to show for solar outreach.

Nice thread, Ivan. Thanks!

I totally agree. However, newbies be warned... It is addicting.

Re: Start of cycle 25.
New active region appeared today in the east, mid latitude so could be another cycle 25 AR, have a look if you get a chance.
