Post by kt4hx »

Just a reminder for those folks that have an opportunity, the Mercury transit is Monday the 11th.

Our forecast is not looking particularly great for the event, so good luck to others.

There's some old guy loading animals onto a big wooden boat here !. Seriously it's pouring down with rain and we have the usual flood warnings.
Monday is forecasting clouds so nothing new there.

Just to double check, so as not to miss first contact, assuming no clouds on the 11th, (76% cloudy days since 2000 on this date!) Mercury moves East to West across the face of the Sun, from about 8 o'clock to about 2 o'clock. So when I point my telescope at it with a camera attached and no star diagonal, do I need to be looking at the apparent 2 o'clock position to observe first contact to allow for the inverted image?

Regards

Graeme

^^^^Just use a camera that gives a full disc image :D

Now that the sun has given me a little show, I've discovered it becomes obscured at my fixed position by 1230 (current day) - So I'll have to set up a tempo rig - it had better not be cloudy!

Dang planning permission! I've 6 acres but I can only install my obsy within my feu; outside that I can only install it for 30 days in a year!

Thanks for the reminder.

The forecast is 97% of the skies obscured, but I will eventually make a pinhole camera obscura to watch it safely, like back in the day.

It's sunny at the moment just to rub it in,

I don’t know about you, but my weather predictions are horribly inaccurate. If i see a prediction for rain in a few days, chances are better that it won’t rain on that day.
The only thing for me that is accurate about weather is radar!

Thanks and good luck everyone!
