Mercury Transit of Sun... Woe is me!!!

#1

Post by Lowjiber »

All solar-heads know that Mercury is due to transit the sun on November 11th 2019. This will be the last transit until 2032.

Obviously, I want to shoot it and others may want to observe it visually as well. So, today I began my planning for the shoot. (Here comes my tale of woe.)

Being close to the middle of the Pacific Time Zone the time-math is not just cut-and-dried. The sun will clear my eastern horizon at 0620 hrs, at which time Mercury will already be one-third of the way across the sun. It will be half-way across at 0722 hrs, and three-fourths across at 0846 hrs.

Here's the "kicker"... The sun will not pass above my 2x air mass (30 degrees) until 0918 hrs and end its journey at 1002 hrs. That gives me forty-four minutes for a decent chance of a good capture of the end of the transit period!

Tough luck, John! Yes, I'll still shoot it, but my hopes of a complete transit are dashed. I'm posting this so other solar-heads (especially east of Las Vegas) can get their planning done beforehand. Hopefully, someone will be able to observe, or capture, the entire transit.

(Note to self: Planning sucks swamp water when it doesn't exactly work out.)

Same considerations here John. On top of that pretty good chance of morning clouds in November. Still, one can hope. :D

At least you get to see something -- I get almost nothing, just the last quarter of it! And this event is over with the sun not quite 18° above the horizon.

Here's in cloudy Seattle, it will be most likely, well....cloudy.

But I'll be celebrating something other and the Mercury transit as that day will be the U.S. Marine Corps' 244th birthday!

Hello John. I am planning to view this with a projection method.

To track the sun I plan on setting up my polar alignment the night before.

It will begin here at 0632 CST.

And yes, Seawolfe, we will eat some birthday cake as well!

Since my wife is a former Marine Sergeant, we definitely celebrate the day every year.

Looks like all of Oz will experience the transit in progress at sunset.

Good luck and clear skies!

Yes indeed. Sigh. How could I get that so wrong?

Here's the link for the upcoming transit at eclipswise.com:
