Happy Holidays/Sunspot AR2916

#1

Post by Jnicholes »

Hi everyone!

Happy Holidays, first off. I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays!

Second, I took this picture today while solar viewing. I wanted to show you all. Camera was an Orion Starshoot USB eyepiece camera ii. I captured some amazing detail of sunspot AR2916. I myself am amazed at how much detail I got. There is an interesting article about it on spaceweather.com. Apparently it has an unstable delta class magnetic field. It also says it can harbor energy for X class solar flares.

Interesting what you can learn from safely looking at the sun and the internet!

Very nice capture Jared!

I was just out looking at that group myself.

I have been tempted by that same camera myself.

Wow. That’s a cool coincidence that we were both looking at the same sunspot group!

Yes, and it's also a coincidence that I was just looking at that camera last night.

I know nothing about non-film AP and thought for that price it might be something I am willing to try.

Just pulled the trigger since it was in stock!!

OK, this is getting weird. You were looking at that same camera last night? That’s amazing!

By “pull the trigger,” you mean you bought it, correct? If you did, I can help you get started using it. It’s a decent camera, but it’s not good for deep sky objects. It’s mainly used for planetary and lunar photography. I figured out how to use it for solar photography.

It has about the magnification of a 5mm eyepiece. I believe it comes with a CD that has the software you need to run it to a laptop. As for processing the videos, you need a program called Registax.

If you need more tips on how to use it, I can help you out. I’m experienced with this camera.

Yep! Just bought it, for 60 bucks I figure I can't go wrong. Even if it's just a learning experience.

Basically would like to capture simple shots of the Moon and Sun, yes, guess I'm getting close to that AP rabbit hole lol.

I'll start a thread when I receive it. I Appreciate any help I can get ;)
