Carrington level event from 1770
This paper talks about records of a Carrington level event observed in Japan and other parts of Asia in September 1770. Of course no telegraph lines to frazzle but the sightings were of exceptionally large aurora displays even down to lower latitudes. There are also drawings of sunspots which show they were twice the size of the 1859 event. The paper includes some very nice drawings of the auroa displays plus eye witness accounts.
Once upon a time, the Carrington event was considered rather unique. However there are records of many large storms ( Feb 1872, Sept 1909, May 1921, March 1989 (Quebec blackouts), 2012 which was fortunately aimed away from us, etc).
With our dependance on technology I wonder how far away we are from brushing up on our stone tool skillset . There has been talk of 'hardening' the electrical grid or simply shutting everything down as we now will have about a day's warning. Even if we we able to get things shut down in time, I suspect a lot of the modern world would still get affected when you consider there was enough energy imparted to the telegraph wires by the 1859 storm that some stations were set on fire and operators shocked.
