Focuser fun!

You are not obligated to recieve your scope back. Sold.

Use this on Alt Az mount? The Quark will always remain in line with the focuser and should hold with everything tightened and snug.

I am going to play with the "stock" Skywatcher focuser again, it has more adjustment screws than the GSO.

Played with the stock focuser while the sun was behind the peach tree behind my house, it has grown since last winter, now the sun is behind it from about 9:10 to 10:30. So I can see the sun from 8:45 to 9:10 and then from 10:30 to 12:30. I am going to ask the neighbors if I can take it down or top it.

I adjusted the focuser and aimed it straight up and put a Quark and a ASI071 my two heaviest pieces and it lifted them fine. Much smoother than the GSO Linear although I can hear a slight scraping noise about every inch or so.

@Lowjiber , good Lord buddy; just read all this... I hope you're getting better and you get the bursitis and now pneumonia done in soon. What caused that, do you know? As for the bursitis, If I did what you did and lived where you lived I would be packing too!

I was thinking about getting some OD 3.8 Solar film. Then I read this; I'm now scared of it

Have a good night all and hopefully the day is clear tomorrow,
Mark

"The Hankmeister" Celestron 8SE, orange tube Vixen made C80, CG4 & AZ-EQ5 mounts.
Too much Towa glass/mirrors.

H/A - PST stage 2 mod with a Baader 90mm ERF on a Celestron XLT 102 (thanks Mike!)
Ca-K - W/O 61mm, Antares 1.6 barlow, Baader 3.8 OD and Ca-K filters with a ZWO ASI174mm.
W/L - C80-HD with Baader 5.0 & 3.8 Solar film, Solar Continuum 7.5nm and UV/IR filters with a Canon EOS 550D.

Oh yeah, and Solar Cycle 25 :D

There is a stronger density film that you use for observing Mark, it is 5.6 or something.
Mentored by Keith, Mike, John and Bill. (The old guard) and forever grateful.
PST mod stage 2 - Quark on extended loan and yet to repay with value ;)
Camera- ASi 174 mono no tilt required.
BF10,15,30 straight through with baader ffc. (looking to replace the rusted IFT on 10 + 15 with a maier replacement)
Lots of nighttime scopes and stuff but focus on the sun.

Yup, the 5.0; I have some. I was looking at the 3.8 as it gives more detail, but it should be used with a high speed camera, not my DSLR or eyeballs... Actually what I really want is a Calcium-K filter, single or preferably double-stack.
If any of you has one you're not using, we need to talk :)

How do you double stack a CaK?

Thanks for the kind words, Mark. :) The pneumonia really kicked my butt. I still have six more days of high-intensity antibiotics, but my apatite is coming back. I have an appointment with a hip doc on Oct 11th... I'm hoping steroids will take care of the bursitis.

I'm chomping at the bit to get back to solar imaging, but am too weak right now to even get the rig set up. Soon, I hope.

I'll echo FRAZ's comments above regarding the OD 3.8 film. I'd stay away from it.

Thefatkitty wrote: Thu Sep 02, 2021 12:33 am Moving forward, I would really like a 1.25" Baader Solar Continuum Filter (single or double-stack; not sure which way to go with that on my scope) and a Baader Calcium K-Line Filter. I really like the images I've seen taken in the Calcium-K wavelength ( nicely done Ben!!). Of course I'd need a photographic-only white light solar filter, but part and parcel. An HA scope/Daystar would be my ultimate to go along with the white-light/Calcium-K.
I have been working with my new Lacerta Herschel Wedges (a 2" and the M42 with my own accessories) Strictly Visual at this point. I have a Baader Solar Continuum filter in 2" which was unimpressive. I did see that Altair has one in 1.25 that is a tighter Bandwidth. Maybe that would help. I tried one of my Ha Filters even though they aren't like extreme narrow band Ha filters/scopes it still produced better definition than the Baader Green Continuum. I did stack some filters to try and get the Blue Continuum and G-Line which was about the same as the Baader Green but with a far wider bandwidth 25-50nm (guesstimate).
Once I get the camera I ordered I will see what details I can extract from those three vs straight White Light. Then I will try the K & H line with the Altair NUV 7nm filter.
I suspect that would help more. I also see that Antlia has a 3NM (Centered on 393.3nm K line only and not adding the H-Line) I don't know if it is worth it because it comes in a dedicated 1.25 Herschel Prism. I just want the filter.
My point is: I don't think the Baader filters are producing great results and I suspect that Altair has sourced better ones.
Things are looking Brighter ;)
Recently I have been doing almost exclusively Solar viewing. I have two Lunts a 40mm & a 50mm which I can triple stack. One to use for imaging and the other for visual. Two Lacerta Herschel Wedges Big & Sm with 120mm & 95x1300 refractors using go to alt/az mounts and my big goto EQ.

There is or was a huge prom on the sun today, naturally while it is clear out the sun is behind my neighbors tree until 10:30am and now it is starting to get smaller
