solar h-alpha telescopes for visual viewing

#1

Post by MrShorty »

I see a lot of nice pictures taken with these dedicated solar h-alpha telescope with their prominences and such. Sometimes I think of getting one of the entry level solar scopes for visual viewing, and I was wondering what the expectation should be. With regular telescopes observing DSOs, one should not expect anything like the pictures you find. Is the same true for solar scopes? Or can you see with your eye up to the eyepiece much the same as the pictures that you find?

The views through a dedicated Ha telescope are quite good though they get very expensive quickly as aperture increases.
Many use a Quark but a short focal length refractor is needed as they have a built in 4.2x barlow to make them work best around f/30.
I have a thread going which discusses some pros/ cons of dedicated vs Quark here: viewtopic.php?f=73&t=677

I don't have a dedicated H-alpha scope but I used to visit some regularly back east. The Lunt scopes and the Daystar system were very impressive. It was very pleasant to watch changes over the course of the afternoons.

I didn't get to try the Quantum or the Daystar dedicated solar scopes. What I got to try out were Lunt 4" scope and an Astro Physics 130mm with the Daystar Quarks attached. I was quite pleased.

Both I imagine would be excellent views, a AP 130mm/ Quark would require a crowbar to remove me :)

Yeah, I was threatened with bodily harm if I didn't stop bogarting the eyepiece!

The Coronado PST is an excellent entry level solar scope, most of us started with one and I wish I'd kept mine !. Add a double stack when funds allow it and you have a fantastic viewing tool. They are not designed for photography but, like most things, there are very inexpensive ways to tweak them.

I completely agree, the PST is a great way to enter the Ha viewing.
