Never look directly at the sun through a telescope without proper filters!
It's an old mantra that we bang on about all the time.
Never look directly at the sun with a telescope without proper filters!
I saw this video posted on Twitter today and it shows exactly how much damage can be done.
Not for the squeamish, he uses a pigs eye for the demonstration.

Re: Never look directly at the sun through a telescope without proper filters!
Hi Clinton,
That was gross!
Looking at the sun through a telescope focused for 40 seconds would be about like sticking your head in a blast furnace!
I can almost imagine someone looking at the sun for one second though and that would surely cause irreparable damage.
No wonder that mounts disable viewing the sun by default without an override!
Thanks,
Jim

Oh my.
I have wondered what actually happens - and well, there it is.
