Lunt Pressure tuned scopes and cold weather

#1

Post by AstroBee »

Does anyone with a Lunt pressure-tuned Ha scope notice that they can't get a decent tuning out of it when the temps are below 50° f?
I'm wondering if the gasket is shrinking and the tuner is not holding pressure?

Hi, the issue is the blocking filter. Lunt makes an after market blocking filter heater, or you could use a dew heater and some insulation wrapped around your BF to bring it on band. My two lunt BF's struggle to come on band under 10 degrees C unless I heat them.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
Maybe I can get back to solar imaging during the winter. I have just never got around to asking the question.

I think a dew heater and insulation will be my first attempt. Lunt wants $180 U.S. for that heater. I'm not a fan of products with built-in batteries that need charging like this product either. Those batteries are only good for so many chargings and then you have a useless brick.
Thank you once again for the tip.

Too expensive for what it is, I already had dew heaters and controller for night use, might as well use what you have. I also use Coronado blocking filters with my Lunt scopes and they don't have the same issue, they work great in cold temps, I've used down to -5 deg C and they work fine. Funny thing is that the coronado BF's were originally designed by Lunt, why couldn't they make their Lunt BF's work the same?

I have the 60 mm, and I use the diagonal heater of the lunt, it is good in very cold temperatures.
I know people who use warmers for mittens.
