Possibly a strong cycle coming up?

#1

Post by Chich »

Just reading this summary article with a different take on the upcoming cycle. While NASA and NOAA are predicting a fairly quiet cycle these fellows are saying that according their study of bands of ultraviolet light that move from the poles this is going to be a very active cycle.

Certainly hope they are on to something.

Well, I'm not so sure I want their prediction to come true. Yes, it will be great of showing sunspot activity - but - it will also most probably lead directly to hotter summers. I'm not a fan of high temps. (one of the reasons I don't live in FLA, TX, etc). OTOH getting better at predicting solar activity would be a great plus for us.

Interesting article - thanks Chich. I hope we don't get increased temperatures but on that score it seems like the train has already left the station.

The late 70s and late 80s had active peaks. I remember seeing auroras many times during each month of those years, including some all-sky displays.
