JPEG to TIFF and Back Again

#1

Post by Lowjiber »

Here's the problem with old JPEG images... They are full of artifacts from the JPEG compression routine. Now, that may seem inconsequential. However, if you ever want to "revisit" the image you'll find that delicate adjustments aren't quite as easy as when the image was in the TIFF (Raw) mode when you first worked it.

Topaz Labs has an application that will convert the JPEG image back to a Raw TIFF, thus removing the compression artifacts. I've had it for some time, but never even tinkered with it... I'm lazy.:)

Yes, one does need to convert the image back to JPEG to post it on the web. However, that only puts ONE series of compressions, vice two if you re-save an old file once again.

Here's an old image that certainly could use some revamping...

I converted it using the application described above and tweaked it a bit.

Be sure to left-click for the true color that doesn't show in the thumbnail.

I just thought I'd share the "new gun" that I've had in my arsenal that was previously untested. Works like a champ.:)

Thanks for tuning in. Clear Skies & Stay Safe.
