Bagged Neptune tonight.

#1

Post by mlecaros86 »

Hello all, just wanted to say I was able to find and see Neptune this evening prior to the clouds rolling in. Thanks to stellarium and Venus being close by I was able to see this rare sight. I saw the planet as a small blue dot at 75x and was able to see this as a small blue disk at 202x magnification. Ill consider this a win for this week.

Hey there, I was using an Orion Starblast 6i. Had my 10mm eyepiece which made it appear like a small blue dot. Definitely looked different than other nearby stars. Then I moved to my 3.7mm eyepiece which enhanced the image to a fuzzy gray blue disk. Probably need a better high resolution eyepiece for clarity.

Actually that's pretty darn good for 6" f5 dob. Probably about as good as it gets!

You should be quite happy. And from your description I am pretty sure you did indeed see Neptune.

I’m pretty content at this point, it’s been a challenge trying to find this planet. I saw it Monday as well but the glare from Venus was so bright that the conditions were poor, so I tried last night with success.

The telescope has a focal ratio of f/5 so a 5mm eyepiece will be your best resolution/ exit pupil for very high power viewing.
If the skies are very stable your 3.7mm (what brand is it?) will work but not often.
You will start blurring things out with to much magnification and possibly have to deal with more eye floaters as the exit pupil shrinks.

I was using the Orion Epic ED-2 eyepiece wide-view. It was okay. I appreciate the advice and will look into a 5mm eyepiece as well. The sky’s were not very stable and I live close to a major city. Bortle class 8 is what I’m contending with at my house.

I have found the Orion Epic to be reasonably decent on axis but really start to degrade the view as you move to the edge of field.
Depending on your budget I would look at the Celestron X-Cel LX eyepieces or Meade HD-60 (same eyepieces so go for cheapest price) a true 60° AFOV (the Epic is closer to 55°) and they work well with Newtonian telescopes.

You are awesome! This is great information. I’m going to look into these eyepieces. Thank you so much.
