Venus & Orion are here!

#1

Post by Big_Eight »

This morning before sun up when I went to take the trash out I looked east and saw Venus in all of it's bright glory it looked like a perfectly round light bulb. I think it's really incredible how bright Venus can be it's such a mysterious planet!

I then tilted my head towards zenith and saw Orion and Taurus Constellations high in the sky. I need to do a late night and get my scope back on M42 what is their not to love about the Orion constellation. This was the first thing I ever saw through my telescope when I first started getting in to Astronomy in the last couple of years.

Do you remember the first time you saw the Orion Nebula?

It is great seeing the Hunter back in the morning sky! My first view was over 50 years ago, seeing it high in the crisp southern sky on a very cold winter night. That view and seeing Saturn through a scope started me on a life-long adventure with the night sky.

I’m looking at Sirius out my window right now. Getting cloudy though.

I first saw M42 in fifth grade, in the dark skies of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Holy oh-wah as my compadres often said. Yah, y’know.

I drink tea, I read books, I look at stars when I'm not cursing clouds. It's what I do.

My first view of it was back around 1970, through my 3" cardboard newt :)

I saw it in my 60mm refractor when I was 9 I think. Pretty impressive even in that instrument.

I too saw this last night, I got up for the bathroom about 4 am and as is my habit peeked through the curtains Mars was twinkling away high in the sky to my right. Glanced left Orion smacked me in the eye; it seemed to fill the sky. A welcome return.
Cheers,

Tony.

Hi Big_Eight. A very nice report from you on the great sights at this time of year. Orion, the hunter always stands out, and is the easiest to recognize from the star charts.
Thanks for your fun read and enthusiastic report Big_Eight and keep looking up.
