I have been using my 180mm Mak-Cass for Lunar photography, and want to go for the gusto. I am saving up foe a Celestron C14 Edge for serious work. Anyone have experience with one? I just want planetary work.

How are your skies? Apart from a faster optic when reaching a targeted focal length with imaging planets which will give a you brighter histogram because of the bigger mirror and longer native fl, you'll get more frame rate with imaging, the sky will be your major limit, i rarely make use of my 12",I only get a few nights a year when I can really push my 12" Meade. There's a significant cost reduction to going with a slightly smaller scope and it will yield similar results to a 14" on average nights.not to deturent you from your purchase but it's something to really consider about aswell. But it would be awsome to have that c14 on a spectacular night though!

Go look at the images produced by Christopher Go. He is the preeminent planetary imager and he uses a C14.

I still vote for Damian Peach as "bull goose loony" planetary imager. C Go's images are very nice but frequently overdoes the wavelet sharpening resulting in "ringing" artifacts at edges. One can see this especially on his Mars and Saturn shots.

Peach's work is not over processed and he also uses C9.25-C14. YMMV of course.

both are pretty good, they both have different techniques,chris go might be dealing with more turbulent skies ,also keep in mind peach has moved on with borrowing a 1 meter Chilescope ! as done with all his main images on his website,i suggest checking out his astrobin.there are a few other good planet astrophotographers too.

Go for it and certainly get the Hyperstar so you can do DSOs with ease. Only if you can carry it and put on a mount of course.

C14 Edge is a large telescope, but for planetary photography the XLT model will perform the same service. The advantage of Edge as already mentioned above is the possibility of making DSOs because the coma at the edges is greatly corrected.
As colleague yobbo89 commented, the limit will be simply due to seeing, so much so that Damian stopped taking photos in England. Another very important factor to take into account in the planetariums is the altitude that the planets pass in their location, if they pass in a good altitude many times even a bad seeing can be circumvented by refined techniques.
My seeing is not the best, the average is around 3/5 and still I can do an acceptable job.
