Comet C/2019 Y4 Atlas 27/03/20

Here's a go at Comet C/2019 Y4 Atlas from last night.

First, a big thanks to The Butcher for pointing out that DSS has a Comet stacking function!

After finding the Comet using APT's GoTo++ tool (brilliant! (like a plate solve and then some!)) and co-ordinates from Stellarium, I captured 16 x 400 second Light frames at iso800. Captures from 22:10 to 23:54. Then took 5 (yeah, I know (it was cold, dark and late!)) Dark frames, 20 Bias frames and 10 Flat frames. This is the first successful use of my cardboard and duct tape light box.

This morning I've staked the lot. Firstly without the DSS comet stacking function and got good stars and a faint fat greenish line where the comet moved through. Second go using Option 2, comet stacking, this compiled an image of the comet but no stars. Then Option 3, stars plus comet stacking.

Here's Option 3:

Very nice Graeme!

I wish that I could see this with my binos, but no go. Too much lp here I guess.

Maybe I will get a shot at this one night. I’ve seen comet stacking in dss, but never tried to image a comet.

Great catch Graeme!

Thanks
Jim

You'll be ok in a few weeks if it gets bright enough!

Cheers Michael.

A few more clear nights when the comet brightens would be great! If it does brighten as expected then there should be a nice tail (or two) to capture an image of.

Regards

Graeme

It is. Stars + Comet Stacking option is a great tool.
