International Space Station

#1

Post by jerrysykes »

Finally after years of off and on trying I managed to get a picture of the space station. Yeah, the focus is a little off and the camera settings could be better but I am still happy with it.

My son in law, Ray was watching the computer screen while I manually guided using the finder scope. Last nights pass was six minutes but we only had about three minutes to get this done due to a big ole pine tree.

I used my 120mm refractor and ZWO 224mc camera.
Sharpcap to capture. Stacked 20 frames with As3 and processed with Registax 6.
Also, this image is enlarged quite a bit.

I can't imagine being able to track the ISS as it sweeps across the sky. This is pretty amazing to me. Great job!

Thanks Bob. Looking through the finder scope and trying to keep the space station centered using an equatorial mount is a hit or miss proposition lol.
Out of several thousand video frames I caught the space station in maybe 50 frames.

Yes, very nicely done. I admire both your skill and dedication.

Hi Jerry,

This is a stunning image. I don't think focus really is an issue here. When you crop an image like you have, I think we are seeing the limit of the resolution for the scope and camera combination. I don't think your focus could have gotten any better.

Cheers,
JT

It must have seemed like an arcade Skeet game shooting such a tiny target moving at a good clip, especially with an EQ mount where up/down left/right are not instinctive reactions.

Thanks UM. I just made sure the finder scope was aligned to the main scope and focused the video camera on the moon. Started capturing frames as the fly over started, released the clutches on the AVX mount and manually kept the ISS as close to the center of the cross hairs as I could.

My son in law was watching the laptop screen to tell me if we were catching the ISS in any of the frames. Of the several thousand frames we captured the ISS was visible in about 50 or so frames.
