First time seeing Mercury

Story:

I went out to try to photograph Jupiter and Saturn. It was FREEZING! After several attempts of trying to get my camera into focus unsuccessfully, I saw on the horizon near the clouds a "star." I looked at it, and realized it was Mercury. Too dim to be Venus.

I immediately pointed my telescope to it, in hopes of getting my first picture of the planet Mercury. After several attempts, I FINALLY got a picture. Its out of focus, and exposure was too high, but I did not have time to adjust these. it was disappearing rapidly.

This was the best I could do with my camera, an Orion Starshoot USB eyepiece camera ii.

Hi Jared. A very nice image of the tiny golden globe Mercury. And you may have an even better view on Friday, Jan. 7 — Mercury at greatest eastern elongation (after sunset). I got a nice photo last May (at greatest eastern elongation) with a telephoto DSLR camera lens. Thanks for sharing this excellent capture with us on here Jared and keep looking up.

Talk about an early birthday present, my birthday is on the 9th!

Let’s hope the sky is a clear that day! It’s clear now, but I don’t know what it will be on the 7th.

I’m gonna try Mercury again tonight. I just need to get my camera focused properly. It’s a little tricky to do that.
