Quick Jupiter and Co

#1

Post by Gmetric »

This was taken using my recently acquired 90mm F11.1 achromat with a 2x barlow and the QHY5LII mono. Taken in a city area in high temps with high humidity, so poor seeing. Best 10% from 3000 dancing and wobbling frames, staked in AS and processed with both Registax 6 and PS 2020. All in all, it represents about 1hr in total, including setting up and packing away. You can probably tell, lol. If you have any advice on how to improve these images, I'm all ears :)

I bashed this a little more in an attempt to liberate more from it :) ... What do you think, better or worse?

Hi GM. I like the second processed version the best. More belting details and the moons show up much better. Thanks for sharing you latest work with us GM, and congratulations on winning the TSS APOD Award today.

Wow! I Just woke up and saw that my image was selected for an APOD :) what a fantastic way to start the day. I’m stoked :)

To answer Tony’s question about wavelets. I used the Gaussian format with linked wavelets, sliding all of the sliders from 1 to 6 in a reducing balanced curve (1 most, 6 least), adjusting the denoise and sharpening values until I have an image showing details that I believe to be true. Lol, a waffly way of saying trial and error 😂. I asked for opinions on the two images because it’s always tricky to find the balance between actual detail and processing artefacts. Personally, I find that It’s real easy to overcook it, especially when the image is less than favourable to start with.

Thank you to everyone for your help and thoughts on this and the APOD.

Congrats on the APOD Gmetric.

Adjusting layer 1 and layer 6 in registax affects all layers, most often I use 1 & 6 to roughly tune and the tweak 2 to 5 to taste. About 0.15 for denoise. Sort of works for me on planets and lunar.

Oh, and an ADC (atmospheric dispersion corrector) I understand is highly recommended for planetary work. I say I understand as I don’t have one either :D

ZWO have a good one at a reasonable price… Just not reasonable enough for me, as I have spent all my brownie points with the missus currently
Cheers,

Tony.

I've never tried it on a planet, but use ImPPG for solar work. The Tone Curve Editor serves a similar function as Wavelets, but is easier to use in my opinion.
