A Pair of Gas Giants

#1

Post by Hankmeister3 »

It wasn't exactly the most optimal conditions with Jupiter and Saturn just 17 degrees above the horizon under PIckering 3 skies.

Captured with a Meade 10-inch f/10 SCT at prime focus (2540mm) with my unmodified Canon EOS 80D DSLR at 6:13 PM CST.

1/6 second at ISO 125 - single frame, no filters.

Processed with Arcsoft's PhotoStudio 6.0. I applied two layers of processing and was able to isolate each planet and flatten the dynamic range to bring out a bit more detail in both though atmospherics was too much to overcome in the final single-frame image. I probably have several hundred frames so I may try stacking though Jupiter and Saturn were moving relative to one another because of Earth's own orbital motion, of course.

This session was pretty much a dry run for tomorrow and I hope to be able to be under a bit better sky (hope springs eternal!) so I can image long enough to capture more motion between the two gas giants. I'm thinking of trying some fancy smancy time-lapse or something or other.

Thanks John. I appreciate you looking and commenting. It was one of the hardest single-frames I've tried to pull off with the two layers and isolating both Saturn and Jupiter to tweak each individually to establish a more reasonable dynamic range between the two. I'll be posting a 20 stacked image shortly that's a touch better ... I think!

Thanks y'all! I guess I didn't have it as bad as most of you posting here. Frankly, given the forecast earlier that morning, I was ready to pack up and head south about two hours to a place call Vandalia and find a place to set up there since the forecast was a bit better there than here. But I got a bit lazy by early afternoon and was distracted by another hobby and I'm glad I did because I did end up with a 2.5 hour window to view this conjunction before the pair was lost to the atmosphere near the horizon.

Hi Henry. A very nice image of the pair. Saturn's rings and the Jovian Galilean moons show up well too. Thanks for sharing this capture with us on here Henry, and keep looking up.

You're very much welcomed! In retrospect, it appears I was fortunate to be blessed with the skies that I had those three days despite the 21st being a windy blurry mess, at least photographically. Despite our limited observing weather windows here in the midwest and central Illinois, I did manage to capture some decent (though not poster-quality) images of Comet Neowise as well as the Great Conjunction of Jupiter-Saturn. And for that I'm immensely thankful despite all my disappointments with 2020 sky conditions and California smoke bombs!

Nice. When I saw the thread title, I first thought of my neighbor and his wife and this week’s HOA virtual meeting.
