Mars - 11/8/20

Post by avid.astronomer »

I recently acquired a ZWO ASI224MC camera and an Orion XX12g GoTo Dob and have been anxious to see how well they perform together on capturing the planets. Here is my latest attempt at Mars before it gets away for the year.

Thanks for the recognition, Gordon and thank you everyone for the kind words.

I'm trying really hard to keep from falling down the AP rabbit hole. I hope this GoTo Dob will satisfy me enough to stop the slide. :D

Really great pic of Mars.
I have a 10" Apertura Dob.
Is there a way to make it a GoTo?
I assume you are not talking about a motorized mount.
I see you are in College Station -- almost a neighbor!
Thanks again for pic.

Thanks, Dennis!

Yes, the Orion XX12g is a motorized mount, which allows tracking. It's a regular dob mount, but there's a computerized motor to control both altitude and azimuth. They do make third-party add-on motorized drives, which I considered, but it would have cost me as much for one of those as it did for this entire telescope.

They also make equatorial platforms for dobs, and even plans online to build your own. However, my carpentry skills are low, I don't have many of the tools necessary, and it would have cost me over $1000 to buy a pre-built one. Buying this used dob was a much better option for me.
