Jupiter & Saturn from 9400 feet

#1

Post by MrShorty »

I had a chance to hang out on the Wasatch Plateau last night (~9400 feet by the GPS). Full report coming, but Jupiter and Saturn were just breathtaking. Not sure how much is elevation and how much was good atmospheric conditions. The camera obviously fails to capture what I could see in the eyepiece, but still shareable. The detail in the eyepiece was just incredible. Saturn I could easily make out the Cassini Division and other bands within the rings. A couple of planetary rings were visible. Several moons (Titan, Iapetus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea, as well as Enceladus and Mimas). On Jupiter, the colors were stunning (often, it is mostly just white with bare hints of orange), but tonight, the pink of the GRS was very distinct from the oranges in the central cloud bands and the darker "greys" of the polar bands. There were so many ripples and waves visible in the central cloud bands that my breath caught.
