Comet Lemmon

#1

Post by OzEclipse »

Comet Lemmon - Thursday 18 June, my primary target last night.

I arrived about an hour after twilight, around 730pm local time. There's a row of pines along the western fence line of the property. So I drove around the 20 acre property, and a location reasonably distant from the tree line to give me a bit of extra By the time I assembled and aligned my mounting, the comet located between the star 12 Hydra and Alphard was beginning to get a bit low hence the gradient from the lower RH corner.

Nice! Is that the one headed north? And going to be good for us in July? All the rest this spring have fizzled.

Hi Steve,

Comet Swan was brighter and had a longer tail. Unfortunately, I only got one night out. Viewed it through 9x63 binoc it was ok but the dew was so heavy that morning it was almost raining.

It's dec is -12 now so already visible from your latitude. In a month it will be +12 DEC in Virgo.

Cheers

Joe, that's really stunning! I haven't even heard about this one; am I living under a rock?

Regardless, great shot, thanks for sharing that! And thanks for the good wishes as well; it meant a lot ;)

All the best,

Hi TFC,

I am sure that some come and go missing my attention too.
I have to keep reminding myself to check for them and sometimes go long periods without checking.

I think most of us are reluctant to make a big song and dance about incoming comets because they so frequently fizz out and the media have a tendancy to beat up all things astronomical these days.

When I remember to look, there are two sites I use to identify potential observable comets.

I periodically check :-

Seiichi Yoshida's Comet page.
http://aerith.net/index.html

and Michael Mattiazzo's Southern Comets Homepage
http://members.westnet.com.au/mmatti/sc.htm

Michael lives in Swan Hill, Victoria here in Australia. He discovered comet Swan and named it after his town. I guess he figured nobody could spell or pronounce Mattiazzo

Once I have an interest in a comet, I use

NASA Horizons
https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons.cgi

or

Minor Planet & Comet Ephemeris Service
https://minorplanetcenter.net/iau/MPEph/MPEph.html

to generate ephemerides. Both sites use highly robust topocentric coordinate generation so that for any near Earth comets or asteroids, you will get coordinates of the body against the background skies with no parallax effects.

The Minor Planet & Comet Ephemeris Service also has an orbital element generator that outputs orbital elements in the exact format required for a variety of planetarium software. You check the box corresponding to your software and you get a text file with elements listed in the same order that they need to be input into the program. After I do that for my software Starry Night, I cross check the comet position in Starry night against the coordinates generated on at least three dates to make sure there are no errors in the orbital elements. Most of these new comets appear in Sky Safari. I guess Simulation Curriculum Software put more effort into keeping their cheaper app updated than they do with their flagship product.

Kind Regards

Joe

Bruce,
Thank you.

Don't be too depressed. Comet Neowise 2020 F3 will be well positioned for mid-north latitude observers and not visible at all from the south around the new moon in July.

Hi Graeme,
Thank you.

Heavens above does not list it by name, just by designation - C/2019 U6. It's the first one on the list. However see my earlier post [#6]. The listing or inclusion of these bodies are all dependent upon the people behind the product adding it. I don't update Starry Night very often so I need to add the orbit of such objects to mine. Even if it is listed by your particular planetarium program, the brightness models vary wildly in accuracy. Seiichi Yoshida's Comet page.
http://aerith.net/index.html includes real reported brightness estimate by observation.

regards

Joe

So it does! More attention to detail required!

I've added it to Stellarium. Stellarium adds by import from the Minor Planet Center's website, so it should be accurate. Lemmon is shown as being visible
in the first couple of weeks of August from my location going past Arcturus just after dark at mag 11 to 12.

I'll be able to have a go at it with my new camera by then!
