ISS solar transit
After shooting many lunar transits, I finally nabbed a solar transit. It’s not as sharp as I would have liked, but shooting the Sun is quite difficult because focus is sort of a best guess scenario without any Sun spots to focus on. I used a Celestron 8se with focal reducer, shot with a Canon T3i in 3x zoom video mode. This mode crops the sensor to a true 1980x1080 array, so there’s no loss in resolution. However, the FOV is tiny. What I did was center the Sun in the FOV in regular still photo mode. Then I rotated the camera to match the direction of the transit. The whole Sun easily fits inside the frame. I then focused on the edge of the Sun the best I could. About 10 seconds before the transit time I switched the camera to video mode, so theoretically I should be focused on the center of the Sun. I was off a little bit. Here’s a link to a short video of the actual pass. The photo is 14 frames of the videos combined in Gimp . Thanks for looking.
