NGC 1582 Challenge of the month December 2021

NGC 1582 is one of the challenges of the month. It is a nice open cluster in Perseus. I observed it with my 150mm f/5 achromat from my city skies. At first glance NGC1582 looked like an arc shaped group of 8 and 9 magnitude stars. So at first I thought the arc was the whole cluster. When I looked longer with 83X and 116X I could make out the arc was part of a group of dimmer stars which formed a rough sort of circle. I am not sure if all dimmer
stars are members of the same group. Within the circle there were much less stars. The Lucida ( the brightest one) is of magnitude 8.6
The cluster looks a bit like NGC6811, the "hole in a cluster".

The length of a report has nothing to do with it at all John. Its the content that matters. If sketching is done in coordination with a visual observation then it certainly warrants consideration. I knew a couple of folks who sketched and/or painted astronomical objects from images rather than direct observation. They did so simply because they enjoyed the process of drawing/painting and were not so much into the observational aspect. In those cases, I would not see that as a basis for a VROD since their interpretation is not of what they've seen directly through a telescope. However, we all know you do enjoy visual observation of deep sky objects and the rendering of those through sketching. So congrats on a well deserved award my friend.

Sketching relying on the view through a telescope is taking visual observing to another level, as you are actually rendering what is seen in the eyepiece, with quite a bit of care. One could write a lengthy report or one could carefully sketch an object. In my mind, it is part of the same mental process, hence certainly worthy of the award. I can write OK but can't sketch worth a darn, for example.

Exactly Michael. I sketch with words, as do you. John puts his words into a visual depiction of the object. Both can be challenging, and both are worthy of being recognized.
