Sketch impression of Jupiter in a 102 mm Maksutov

#1

Post by John Baars »

Just returned from holiday last Saturday. The weather there left a lot to be desired. And not just there. You know, just as clear, stuff out, high clouds, closed again, stuff in, open again, Grrrrr. And dragging the heavy telescope every time.

Saturday around midnight (actually Sunday) it was clear again and I thought: "Yes, I'm not funny, don't go lugging the stuff again." (wasn't unpacked yet), instead I grabbed the grabngo 102 mm Maksutov.

I noticed that the sky between the clouds was quite transparent and the seeing just good. And so it was also noticed that the image with the 14mm Morpheus eyepiece (114X enlarged) was in any case good. Then I cleaned up and went to bed. It had been a tiresome day. The next day I produced a sketch from memory. I do not guarantee the correct placement of various details, but this is the overall impression of Jupiter. Actually to give an idea of what the simple 102 mm Makky is capable of. The paleness of the image is part of the impression.

Great sketch John and congrats on winning the VROD for the viewing and the sketch. I hope more folks turn to sketching what they see at the eyepiece.

Nice John - a good sketch, and congrats on the VROD.

I am always spurred on by good sketches to start sketching, but most of the time it is so wet here that it isn't really feasible to try and bring paper out with me for that purpose.

Maybe one of these nights.

Very nice sketch, John...and from memory no less! My memory on such detail has long since diminished!

Congrats on the VROD award!

I am always spurred on by good sketches to start sketching, but most of the time it is so wet here that it isn't really feasible to try and bring paper out with me for that purpose.

Maybe one of these nights.
That is why I usually make three sketches.
-One at the telescope, with a ballpen, a small notebloc. Just for positioning of rough details, sometimes finer details too. This is done very quickly. When it is dry enough outside, I use a pencil. If it is damp, I use a pen. If on planets one can use a small headlamp too, planets don't care for night vision.
-One I make inside the house, immediately after the observation, with pencils, on whatever paper I can find.
-The final one, the next day, while enjoying a cup of coffee, with all sketching materials present and even adding some color.

Here you see all three of them in a drawing of Mars on the 13th of september 2020.

In this case I made a rough quick sketch with a pen next morning (against my habit). One day later I did the final. So I skipped one stage.

Nice sketch John, and congratulations on the VROD.

I have been itching to get my c90 Mak outside for some fun, it's amazing what a small Mak can show.

As to sketching, well, let's just say my skills have not improved since I was about 5 years old 😆.

That said I would like to try it since AP is not up my alley.
