Total eclipse in Libya - 14 years on

#1

Post by OzEclipse »

Fourteen years ago, I was travelling around Libya. While in the the east of the country, the Great Sand Sea, I observed and photographed nearly 5 minutes of totality. For a week before the eclipse I travelled to the western region where Libya meets the borders of Algeria and Tunisia. Near the border, there is a Unesco World Heritage mud brick city called 'Ghadames' that has been inhabited since the 4th Century.

Post eclipse, I spent a week in the Sahara desert to the south and west of Sabha. So have extracted a couple of photos from this trip plus eclipse images.

Call to prayers at dawn woke us too. So we headed out and photographed this beautiful mosque at sunrise

The umbra pokes its nose over the horizon a couple of minutes before totality.

Dune fields. On a 4wd tour in the Sahara, west & south of Sabha our 4wd broke down in the midst of these fantastic dunes. We camped there overnight while we waited for parts. I woke before dawn, walked off to this spot and took this photo as the sun rose.

This is beautiful work, Joe. 👍
Travel to Libya would have been "exciting" in itself !
I am assuming this was a trip planned to chase the eclipse as you did last year in SA.
Thank you for posting this wonderful set !
Regards to you Sir.
