Another Pass 2017 Eclipse

#1

Post by sdbodin »

Well, long nights with no data coming in, so why not try that current S&T article on HDR eclipse processing. Posted my image series of this event on that old forum back when it was relevant. But, being somewhat ignorant of PS wonders, tried their method to my sequence of exposures. Probably don't have a really good stepped exposure set, mine are too coarse. However a range from 1/4000 sec to 1 sec was available for this try.
eclipse_hdr_repro3.jpg
Probably should do more tweaking, but good enough for now.

Shot thru Orion SD80 on my beat-up CG-4 with ASI1600MC-cool, Baader Fringe Killer filter, automatic sequence programmed into Nebulosity in my usual spaghetti code, but it worked, unlike some from real programmers. Imaged on Frontage road of I-84 in Durkee, Oregon in ODOT gravel dump along with a dozen others just there to watch. Posted image edge cropped and 25% full size.

Just marking time wait for moon and clouds to go away,
Steve

Those were the days, Steve.
The skies were exciting and we were all planning our excursions to view this wonderful event.

Thank you for posting your beautiful image.

Clear skies to you, Sir!

Steve,

Don't give up just yet.

I assume you are referring to the two sudden intensity steps that I have marked in yellow on your picture. I don't subscribe to S&T so am not familiar with the method you are using. Assume you are just using the built in HDR function.

However, if you captured the originals in raw, you can create finer exposure steps using multiple raw developments from each exposure.

If you captured one stop intervals, at the exposures that transition the intensity steps, develop and export 16 bit versions with exposure slider settings of +0.3 / 0 / -0.3.

If you captured two stop intervals, at the exposures that transition the intensity steps, develop and export 16 bit versions with exposure slider settings of +1.0 / +0.7 / +0.3 / 0 / -0.3 / -0.7 / -1.

kind regards

Joe

Thanks Joe,

I have a rather random set of exposures, but I can weed thru them and try this method, should work. But, I'll leave that to the next cloudy season.

Trying to make that ultimate 'wall hanger'.

Thanks for the procedure,
Steve
