Hey Ben, Did you ever have the non-cool version of the ASI174 like I have, if so how would you compare them?
I have often wondered how much difference the heat signal would make? I also wonder if a dark frame would help on solar shots. I'm going to put a post up about this in discussions if you are interested.

I have both the cooled and uncooled, I use the uncooled in the winter time from-5 F to 50 F. I really haven't seen that much difference in the noise between the two and if there is noise I drop it into AI Denoise from Photoshop.
I don't do darks but I have started using the Daystar Flat Cap to do flats and sub them out in sharpcap

We have been getting some clear skies over here but a pretty bald sun.
On another note. Do you think we could start the monthly solar message up again and would you be interested in hosting it?
It would mean firing off the original topic and keeping it on track. I would share the responsibility with you or any others but we need a starting point.
We would have to establish where it would be hosted but mods want it in discussions and I think it needs to stay in solar images like before to establish a community.
This is perhaps something we should talk to the wider community about. If we think it could work in discussions it would need links between the two. It is fighting on two fronts imo.

At some point I would like to but right now I am pretty busy, I am one of the two Trustees at the Seagrave Observatory ( www.theskyscrapers.org ) and am working on 3 award programs from the Astronomical League I don't even have time to get to the HO train club I belong to.
The main reason is that while I am an ok imager I am not that knowledgeable and a little slower at age 68 than I used to be, LOL
