AR2822 from May 8, 2021

Post by Thefatkitty »

Afternoon all, hope you're good :D

I had a window of clear sky this morning and seeing how there's a new spot coming around, AR2822, I thought to see if I could get something of it.

I used my Celestron C80-HD @ f/11.4, Baader solar film, and my Canon EOS 550D set at ISO 100 and 1/250th sec exposure. I took 20 shots, aligned them with PIPP, and stacked 40% in AS3. I then processed the final image with the Camera Raw Filter and the Smart Filter in Photoshop. The end result:

ISO100-250_AR2822.jpg

And here it is full size

Meh. Anyways, it looks like it will be fairly clear tonight, though a bit chilly at 7C (45F). I'll see how that works out for me... ;)

All the best,
Mark

"The Hankmeister" Celestron 8SE, orange tube Vixen made C80, CG4 & AZ-EQ5 mounts.
Too much Towa glass/mirrors.

Thanks Michael! That spot below; they're actually all part of the same sunspot "group". Always fun to watch them progress, weather permitting... ;)

Thanks Mike, hope it comes to pass for you! I was going to try again today, but the clouds are not having any of that! Best of luck :D

FRAZ wrote: Sun May 09, 2021 12:22 pm Hi Mark,

Thanks Fraz, though I have to admit it wasn't quite what I was hoping for. Was having a software issue with ImPPG, which for white light really brings out the granulation. I seem to have it fixed now :D All the best to you!

I reprocessed this with ImPPG after I figured out why it wasn't working for me lately. I would start it, load an image of ol' Sol, and be presented with this:
Image3.jpg

Huh? Never used to do that. If I turned the sigma in the L/R deconvolution down to 0.6000 or below, it "went away", but so did any detail. My saved profiles, which I've used for over 2 years, just made a mess. Odd that.

So I took a look at the settings in ImPPG. Seems I did something somewhere in the past... This setting below; I changed it from GPU to CPU + bitmaps.
Image5.jpg

And the winner is.... me!! Much better:
Image7.jpg

And the end result with a now properly working ImPPG:
ISO100-250_AR2822_2.jpg

And here it is full size

I think that's a "glitch"; that vertical line a bit to the left above the sunspot. That seems to happen when it's not 100% clear out, which it was not. Still, I'm happy to have figured out what was going on with ImPPG. Now I can just hope for clear skies!

All the best,
Mark

Hey mark, nice work and detective work.

I must get the SCT out and take a look at old sol (suitability filtered) might try some projection imaging from the zoom I have on the DSLR. Thanks for reenergising me on this. Mind you, seeing the sun is a luxury at the moment here.
Cheers,

Tony.

Thanks Tony; yeah, figuring that out made my Sunday morning for sure :D I'd like to see your results with that, but there's that clear sky thing, I know. Few and far between it seems, even here.

Here's hoping you get a chance and all the best,
Mark
