AR2786 w/100mm scope

#1

Post by Lowjiber »

Over the holiday weekend, I continued to be mesmerized by AR2786. Here's one shot with a 100mm (f/9) scope... When combined with the Quark, that comes out at f/39. I just got around to processing it today.

Thanks for the peek.:)

It is indeed.:) We've got a few scattered, low clouds today, but seeing is 4.5/5 this morning at 1015hrs. I've rarely used the 100mm, as the seeing has to be at least 4/5.

Great shot John, love the detail you captured. Also, why would it be more difficult to use a 100mm scope as opposed to 50mm or 80mm?

Michael, in the case of my "arsenal" of scopes to use with the Quark, my 100mm is an f/9 which when combined with the 4.3x internal barlow in the Quark can be a nightmare in poor seeing conditions... resulting in many dropped frames, etc. My other two (ED) scopes are: Z-61 (f/5.9) & SW 80mm (f/5). The little Z-61 is darn near impervious to degraded seeing up to a point, but its FOV is way too wide for anything short of a full disk.

So, with a Quark it is not the aperture, but the focal ratio that needs to be considered.:)

John, that's crazy; f/39!! I know the Quark comes with a built-in barlow, and from what I gather f/9 for a scope is the limit pretty much with these. Great detail; thanks for the share!

All the best,
Mark

"The Hankmeister" Celestron 8SE, orange tube Vixen made C80, CG4 & AZ-EQ5 mounts.
Too much Towa glass/mirrors.

H/A - PST stage 2 mod with a Baader 90mm ERF on a Celestron XLT 102 (thanks Mike!)
Ca-K - W/O 61mm, Antares 1.6 barlow, Baader 3.8 OD and Ca-K filters with a ZWO ASI174mm.
W/L - C80-HD with Baader 5.0 & 3.8 Solar film, Solar Continuum 7.5nm and UV/IR filters with a Canon EOS 550D.

Oh yeah, and Solar Cycle 25 :D

All the best,
Mark , The Quark is most comfortable at or around F/32 , that is why they contain an onboard 4.3 barlow . The true limiting factor is the sky , because they are designed to operate at these long focal lengths conditions conditions become more critical . That is why many Quark owners quite often will have an arsenal of short tube frac's .

When I was "gathering" scopes for use with the Quark, I looked at the range of focal ratios that DayStar recommended. Over 100mm aperture was going to require an ERF on the front end, so I picked the 100mm f/9 as the top of the range.

I have two ST-80's (f/5) that are fully tricked-out, so I took some shots with the Q on board. They worked well to give me an idea of what was going on with the strange filter. However, I wanted something a little longer an picked the WO Z-61 ED (f/5.9) for the bottom end of the range.

Then something in the middle focal ratio range was needed, so I bought an SW Pro ED 80mm (f/7.5) that was going to give me a "comfortable" f/32. That's my workhorse scope. (I liked that scope so much that I bought another one for a grab-n-go.)

Skywatcher focusers kinda suck for AP, so I tricked the 100mm out with a GSO 2" steel-shaft crayford and put a 2.5" Moonlite on the 80mm. All three of the scopes have a UV/IR-cut filter permanently installed as the first thing the light sees after entering the tube... The Z-61 really didn't need one, but better safe than sorry.:)

(I have eleven fracs. I guess that makes me a frac-head and a solar-head.)
