I am a huge fan of the solar work by professional photographer Alan Friedman. He not only captures great images, but adds an artistic touch to his processing methods. His work can be seen on his website here...

One of his images was featured on SpaceWeather.com this morning, and I decided to attempt to recreate his style, since I'm "smoked in" today.
The data for my image was posted on

viewtopic.php?f=69&t=12061 Since I still had the AVIs,
I set to work trying to figure out just how Mr. Friedman did it. It's more difficult than it first appears.
- The prom has to be blurred about 2.0 pixels.
The surface has to be inverted and blurred before adding color.
The two images have to be married together with a slight fuzziness applied to the surface edge beforehand.
Once married, the composite gets another blur of 1.2 pixels.
I tried for a light blue tint to the proms and black background by adding a blue gradient layer across the composite. The proms took on the gradient, but my sky was too black for it to take effect. The next time I shoot one, I'll add enough gain to enable me to use the gradient similar to what he does... fingers crossed.
