Tuning Up For Imaging Season

#1

Post by Lowjiber »

It has been an awful year here in Vegas for solar imaging. As a result, I've been pretty much dormant... Having only shot three images since last November.

With the Summer Solstice upon us (today), I figured I'd better sharpen up my Photoshop skills a bit. After looking at some images that are over-cranked a bit, I thought I'd take an old image from 2017 and hype it up a little. This image won something on AF, but I can't remember what.

Below is the original JPEG image and the "popped" one right above it.

Thoughts????

The after shot really does pop!

Hopefully the new solar cycle will give you some new imaging opportunities.

Regards

That is a great comparison. And that is quite a prominence! I assume it was stacked from a video. Did the video your images were made from show movement of the prominence? There are times I think I am seeing movement in my prominence videos. Because of that, I worry the stacked image may not show sharp details. Is there anything to my worries about that?

And yes I have definitely become aware (as your 2 images show) you have to up the intensity of prominence details. Otherwise things look rather flat. I am also getting wrapped up in trying to coax more details out of the surface so it looks "right". YIKES!

Bottom line, a great image comparison and hoping to see more from you soon!

Thanks Greg. I shoot my 1,000 frames so fast that any movement in a prom is negligible. I did shoot that "famous" loop at 5 o'clock a couple of years ago that was gone when I started my second capture... nothing left except two mid-sized proms.

*By "famous", I mean that only myself and one other imager were lucky enough to catch it... right time, right place.

Nice image from 2017 John. Hope the skies are a bit better so you can do some imaging. Are you seeing any signs of the Sahara dust in the atmosphere? I haven't noticed anything yet.

Michael, I haven't seen any evidence of the Sahara dust yet. I was set-up for a shoot a couple of days ago when 5,000 acre fire started spewing smoke from atop Mt. Charleston... a 12,000 ft mountain directly west of the valley.:(
