here's a bonus image from the same shoot with a couple satellites visible and possible galaxy in the top right part of the image about 3/4ths of the way over from the left and about 1/10th of the way down from the top:

That's a lucky strike,

meteor flying across the North America Nebula, above California,
and the Andromeda Galaxy is visible as well,

Were those taken from a rest stop or did you just pull over on the 5? I'm curious b/c I used to drive on an interstate through some darker skies than home and I was hesitant to stop on the shoulder - figured I might catch a semi up my wazoo.

Looks like it is the off-ramp.

I had this exact thought when returning from my home town Christmas night. The skies were so dark and transparency was excellent but I forgot my wide angle lens which I normally have in my bag.
