Outback sky on a Moonlit night

#1

Post by Falcon 63 »

Hi all,
thought I'd show you how our night sky looks even when old Mr Evil is shining brightly.
Photo was taken just north of a little town in outback Western Australia called Mt Magnet
Single frame, 30 seconds. No photo shop or enhancement.
You may notice that I used my Landcruiser roof to block out the Moon.
Also in the top right is Jupiter photo bombing my snap.

Thank you Falcon.
I enjoyed the bit of description as well as the photo.
Australia is a humongous continent. When I was a young man I contemplated immigrating to Australia. I don't really remember why I thought it would be attractive. It is far too late to immigrate, but I would like to visit there someday.
Do you live in Mt Magnet?

Hi, no... I live 40 km's north of Perth. We venture out into the goldfields every winter doing some prospecting.
Mt Magnet held an Astro and Rock festival in town.
There was 15 - 20 scopes set up on the local football ground. Pea shooters right up to a 20 inch Dob.
My snap was taken about 20 km's north of town at a place called Blackmans. We were camped there for a couple of days scrounging for gold.

No, you need to head east into South Australia. I have found a couple of Emerald species at a area called Poona.

My father and I used to import Australian opal for our jewelry making hobby...beautiful minerals.

One of my uncles, who was a geological engineer, visited us when I was about 8 years old. He had a quart Mason jar full of gold nuggets the size of peanuts. 😊
I have no idea whatever happened to them.

Yup.
But back then, 1962, gold was $35 an ounce. 😊
That sure is an amazing sky when the moon is out. No way would I see the MW here on a night like that.

Yes...not a lot of light pollution out there. Less than 2000 residents for about 50000 square km's.

I would love to be able to capture an image like that....

I've got 64 pictures of a tiny, light polluted section of the Milky Way which I'm trying to stack and process however they are 10 second exposures in RAW format taken on my Samsung S9plus.....

...add to that my ultra limited knowledge with Photoshop CC..... I dont expect much.

One day Rodney, one day.....(UK members will know what I mean!)

Thankyou for the picture...great inspiration for me to keep trying :)
