Firefly lights it up

Mucking around with my old Nikon and the Rokinon 10 mm lens in early evening, and caught this little guy.

Hehe, he thinks hes the ISS.

We don't get fireflies in Ireland or where I grew up in Scotland and I've only ever seen them once, walking back from a dusk fishing expedition on a trout stream in New Hampshire
It was one of the most wonderous and entrancing sites I've ever seen. At first I'd no idea what they were as the lifted off from the grass ahead of me. I was so taken by the sight that as soon as I got into my hotel room I called my wife and babbled at her about it for 10 minutes before I remembered she was at home in Switzerland where it was 3 AM. Whoops! Your image took me back to that trout stream Thanks!

The only item that went ballistic was a bald eagle that I disturbed from his eyrie (in that very same tree).

Nice capture. I'm a little surprised to see one this late in the season. I guess Canadian fireflies are made of sterner stuff than the ones in the States!

Hi Bob, we had a super warm September - anywhere from 25*C to 30*C for weeks(!), through to the 26th or so. Since then its been cold (4-8*C) and raining hard. No bugs of any kind left since late last week.

We had a warm September as well, the warmest on record. All the fireflies around here bugged out in August when lows went into the upper 40's (8-9C) for a couple of nights.

Yeah we still have a few stragglers around here this time of year. Always makes me a little sad. There he is, flashing for a mate that will likely never answer...

While at the scope, I am used to catching meteors in my peripheral vision. In spring when fireflies begin ramping up, I'll catch one peripherally and look over quickly thinking it is a meteor. Darn things get me every time.

Well, I figured it couldn't be an intelligently controlled flying saucer since I don't believe fireflies (i.e. "lightning bugs" down south in Texas where I was born and raised) have an IQ much above, say … a Canadian gnat. Heh!
