This nightscape is looking north... you can see the ubiquitous aurora due north, but in the northeast is also the emergence of some of the winter constellations. I think I can see the Pleiades just peeking out among the trees.
If I was smart (or ambitious) I would throw my gear into the canoe and paddle over to Black Island to get a look at the entire Eastern sky.

I've seen good ol' M45 waving above the tree on the east side of my back yard a few times lately. Seems weird, especially since there are still a few straggling lightning bugs flashing around in the dark.
The night insects have changed tenor and tempo here. The sound of pending autumn has shown. Won't be long before we (at my latitude) feel autumn's breath on the wind. Always a bit melancholy, but also good. Makes me think of when Bilbo set out from the Shire toward the Lonely Mountain.
