Hi Joe. Wow, what a wonderful nightscape image from you and the entire capture is very dynamic. Excellent framing and you really set your focus and exposure time to show the star trails, storm clouds, and foreground details. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece with us on here Joe and congratulations on receiving the much deserved TSS APOD Award today for this fine work.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Here's a little more detail on how I performed the capture:-

I saw the storm off the front deck.
Using my handspan, I estimated it spanned 10-15 degrees so I grabbed full frame DSLR, 135mm f2 lens(15 deg across), tripod and cable release.

I set up the camera on a tripod
Pentax K1 DSLR ISO 100. Av mode Compensation -1eV
Rokinon 135mm f2 lens set to f3.5
Intervalometer set to 35s interval

The camera in Av mode gradually takes longer and longer exposures as twilight gets darker. As soon as one exposure ends, the next begins. At the beginning of the sequence, exposures were 8 s and the exposures soon began climbing/lengthening to 30s.

The low ISO ensures maximum dynamic range and the -1eV leaves a little "head room" on the histogram and in the sensor wells for those exposures where the lightning flashes. The screen shot below is captured from my Lightroom. The complete sequence has 26 exposures taken over a 20 minute period

Thank you for the technique. I'm always looking for different ways to expand my imaging. Nightscapes are something I've wanted to get into but my backyard doesn't really support it. That and relying on only getting two days a week of possible imaging time for me, weekends, doesn't help either.

I so want an obsy!

Clear Skies,
Chris
