Wanipigow Aurora - different flavours

Comparison of high intensity aurora vs lower intensity aurora borealis. The bottom image was taken last July 30, 2019, and the top a few days later...near my cabin. Both were a 30 sec exposure at 1600 ISO, F3.3.

One can appreciate how the intensity of this phenomenon might interfere with visual work in the Northern skies. At that point you just relax, have a cup of tea and enjoy the show.

A number of years ago my wife and I flew to Alaska in December to visit some old friends who were teaching at a college in Fairbanks. We flew the big air service into Anchorage and then a very small plane to Fairbanks. The only other cargo in this little airplane was the newspaper shipment to Fairbanks.
On that flight was the first and only time I have experienced the Aurora. It went on and on...I will never forget the experience. :-)

That is quite stunning Ian, and something my wife and I hope to experience one of these days. I feel there is some things that everyone ought to see at least once.A few of them are a total eclipse (which we saw last year), a full bore aurora show (which is pending), a comet that displays a bright stunning tail to the naked eye (that was Comet West for me), a meteor storm (still waiting on that one personally!). and visually obvious spiral structure in a galaxy (many times with M51 and some others). :smile:

Thanks! We are not that much further north than many in Europe, but we seem to get a regular showing from the aurora.

Hi Alan, of all of those bucket list items, I have not seen a meteor storm or the comet with a bright tail. Hopefully soon - the nice thing about these aurora displays is that they happen very frequently, any new moon with good seeing will give you a show. And, its not too far north.

Most welcome! They do last some nights for hours. Those in July lasted about 5 hours with waning and waxing activity.

Wow, those shots are stunning, Ian! I've seen them before, but not as intense as that! Like Mark, I saw them once from an airplane, flying out to all things a Boy Scout Jamboree in Kananaskis, ALTA, and when I used to live in Les Cedres outside of Montreal. It was cool from the airplane, but nowhere near as bright as that.

Lovely. I saw a bright show on Kvaløya in Norway in 2015. A Kp5. Lit up the ground around us. One day I'll get back up north!
