An emu on its head, skyglow, Eta Carina
Still processing images from last weekend. This was staring into the void. I knew what the view looked like but staring out with full dark adaptation, the landscape was pitch black. The landscape was recorded with a single 5 minute exposure, the sky with 4x20s exposures stacked [median]

No towns or cities in that direction. It's possibly auroral because I am looking due south and people do record the aurora photographically but most likely it's chemical skyglow.
Chemicals in the upper atmosphere get excited into an excited energy state during the day by UV light form the sun, then emit visible light at night the colour of the light is related to the identity of the chemical. Had a quick look but can't find the reference link about this. I read it a few years ago, it explained the relationship between certain colours and certain chemicals.

Fantastic image. So what did you use (program) to put the image together? You mention the landscape and sky were shot separately.... And what program do you use to stack your images?

Re: An emu on its head, skyglow, Eta Carina
Hi Brent,
I stack using Adobe Photoshop. Usually, I start in lightroom and apply the lens profile corrections then export the corrected files to photoshop for stacking. On this occasion, I simply forgot and stacked the raws straight in Photoshop. Then overlaid the 5 minute shot of the very dark landscape and removed its overexposed, star trailed sky to expose the stacked sky below. There is no subject matter where the profile correction is critical so I left it.
